No-Limit Hold’em Strategy

Putting the pressure on your opponent in no-limit hold’em

There is a constant war going off in the modern day online poker games and that is a war of aggression. If it has been folded to you in the cut-off and you raise with a hand like 8s-6s then you are raising and placing the emphasis onto your opponents to have a hand. However in deep stacked situations then opening raises tend not to mean an awful lot and especially from position! So if the game is say $1-$2 then you may open to $6. So when the button three bets you to $18 then they are using that same emphasis to have a hand on you and not them.

They may be risking more money but the move is more powerful. You are risking $6 to win an immediate $3 and they are risking $18 to win $9 but the re-raise is simply more powerful and they also have position as well. This is basically taking the aggression to what I call level 2. The opening raise is a basic level 1 positional play and will work when your opponents have junk. However you are risking $6 to win $3 and so you will need more in your arsenal than just making your hand on the flop if you get called.

But re-raising is taking advantage of conventional play and is what I deem to be level 2. However because level 1 raising is so well known then level 2 almost becomes the new level 1 in a way and so we have moved down a level through players becoming better and more educated. So what this means is that we must now enter the possibility of what I call level 3 and we need to do this more often!

Level 3 is four betting or calling the three bet and looking to play some poker with your opponent post flop and then looking to pressure them at that stage of the hand. I think that playing post flop poker is a better way of handling your opponents and putting pressure on them. This is because the better players know that level 2 is very basic now although not as basic as level 1. This means that level 3 play although not entirely conventional is almost getting that way.

So level 4 is needed as well and level 4 is five bet shoving and also taking advantage of your opponents aggression and greed post flop. Level 4 means being prepared to play for stacks when your opponents are not and this can lead to some very big wins in sessions. It can also lead to greater swings as well and walking into the nuts is an occupational hazard so to speak. So what you need to remember is that level 1 and level 2 play has become so conventional that you need to take your play to level 3 and level 4 more often now as this is how the modern online game has gone.
